Reinventing old jobs
Lester Thurow argues that the dominant competitive weapon of this century will be education and skills of workers. As we know, unlike the twentieth century, the power of countries is determined mainly not by its natural resources but for its intellectual strength. Today, our generation is already aware that education is a task never completed. The knowledge society leads inevitably to an open workplace where the idea of the job has changed for business projects, and where the pursuit of prosperity, personal or social, requires a recycling and a constant update of our abilities. In this changing world, we have to face uncertainty in the most confortable way. As Charles Handy (one of the best business culture philosophers) says, it is not the moment to look for a stable contract, it is the moment to look for a new psychological and personal safety. It is important to internalize that if something does not work, we are always able to do something else. Each of us must become our own security. In this new world stage in the `field organizations, where mergers, takeovers, strategic alliances, huge companies, homogenization, triumph of telecommunications, globalization and work flexible imposed, we can not wait for a secure job and a long career. We have to decide which kind of life we want and go out and make it happens. Thus, Handy says that education must adapt to these new times and that students have to understand that not all world's problems have been solved or has a clear response. The world is full of open questions unanswered and new educational system should be aimed at strengthening confidence in ourselves and in our own value. In this regard, we must also learn to unlearn, to be able to abandon old paradigms and build new ones. We accept that old recipes can no longer be useful for changing and uncertain times that require new ways to be conducted. Without compliance with these basic premises is difficult to predict what should be the adult work life of many of us. So you must accept that the success formulas of the past do not imply future success and each of us we must anticipate, look for new goals and, if necessary, slow down, stop, look and provide us the elements of reflection to help us reinvent our world if we do not want others do to it for us.
